PASSIVE FIRE PROTECTIONS SPECIALIST FIRESTOP CONSULTING
What is a Firestop? A firestop is a passive fire protection system of various components used to seal openings and joints in fire-resistance rated wall and/or floor assemblies, based on fire testing and certification listings. Unprotected openings in fire separations void the fire-resistance ratings of the fire separations that contain them, allowing spread of fire past the limits of the fire safety plan of the entire building. Firestops are designed to restore the fire-resistance ratings of rated wall and/or floor assemblies by impeding the spread of fire through the opening by filling the openings with fire resistant materials On the surface firestop looks simple to the untrained eye. Firestop systems can be complex and are lab tested to precise tolerances. Unlike a light fixture that does not work when switched on, firestop systems that are not installed correctly will not be known until lives and property are in danger. 90% of firestop systems are installed incorrectly. The firestop process is often viewed by the trades as a necessary evil. Many people do not understand the testing and dynamics of materials in a fire scenario, and put an apprentice to the task with no ULC system drawings to go by. I can’t tell you how many times I have overheard someone say just paint it red and make it look good. We complete this work to help others inspect, access, and realize the vital role compartmentalization plays in building safety and the preservation of property. A Firestop consultant can take the guess work out of the firestop process and limit your firm’s liability.
